Self Test: Real Or Fake Diamond
Fill glass of water with water about ¾ of the way and drop the stone into the glass carefully
Hold the stone between two fingers and breath a light fog will form because of the moisture and heat in your breath
Fog disappeared right away?
Fog remained for several seconds?
Using a set of plyers to grasp the stone, heat the stone for approximately 40 seconds and then drop it into a cup of cold water.
It remained in tact?
Draw a small dot on a white piece of paper. Lay the stone above the dot. Through the pointed end of the diamond, look onto the paper.
Don’t see a dot/reflection?
See a circular reflection?
Riskier test* Acquire sandpaper and sandpaper the stone; make absolutely certain that it is regular sandpaper and not one that is covered with diamond powder.
Scratch the stone against glass.
Glass is scraped?
Glass is unscratched?
Hold the stone in the light to observe its sparkle. Diamonds have high refractive index so they sparkle more than other materials.
Outdoors: it reflects rainbow colors?
Indoors: it reflects rainbow colors?
Acquire a loupe (magnifying glass) & look for imperfections. Most diamonds have them but fakes look perfect. Also counterfeit diamonds typically have somewhat rounded edges.
